FMCSA updated its approved ELD device list and mandate enforcement procedures in 2026. Several older devices lost certification — here is what changed and what you need to do if your device is affected.
What changed with ELD rules in 2026
FMCSA's technical specifications for ELD devices were updated in the Federal Register in late 2025, with a compliance deadline that kicked in in 2026. The core mandate has not changed — CMV operators subject to HOS rules must use a registered ELD — but the technical requirements for device certification were tightened.
Key 2026 change: Devices that relied on older Bluetooth and USB data transfer protocols were required to update to the newer API-standard data transfer format. Devices that did not update lost their FMCSA registration.
How to check if your device is still compliant
The FMCSA maintains a publicly searchable database of registered ELD devices at eld.fmcsa.dot.gov. Search your device provider name and model. If it appears with an active registration date and no sunset notation, you are compliant. If your device is missing or marked inactive, you have a problem.
Devices that lost certification in 2025-2026
Several first-generation ELD devices from smaller providers could not meet the updated technical spec and their manufacturers chose not to resubmit. The FMCSA published these on their deregistered list. While we cannot name specific devices here (the list changes), providers to watch include any ELD company that has gone out of business or stopped releasing software updates since 2023.
What happens if you are using a deregistered device
Operating with a deregistered ELD is treated the same as having no ELD at all — it is a violation subject to out-of-service orders and civil penalties. Inspectors check the FMCSA database in real time at roadside. There is no grace period for devices that have been deregistered.

- 11-hour driving limit within a 14-hour window
- 30-minute break required after 8 hours of driving
- 60/70-hour limit over 7/8 consecutive days
- 34-hour restart must include two 1–5 AM periods
- Short-haul exemption: 150 air-mile radius, back to home terminal daily — no ELD required
Choosing an ELD in 2026
The market has consolidated. Major providers — KeepTruckin (now Motive), Samsara, Platform Science, and Omnitracs — all maintain active FMCSA registration and offer regular software updates. Avoid purchasing an ELD from a provider who does not clearly show their current FMCSA registration number in their marketing materials.
